How to use the online voice recorder
Press Record, allow the microphone and speak. Press Stop, trim the start and end, choose MP3 or WAV and press Download. Everything happens in your browser, and the recording stays saved on this device until you delete it.
- Pick a mode: Voice for speech, Music for singing and instruments.
- Press Start recording and choose Allow in your browser’s prompt.
- Speak and keep the level meter out of the red. “Too loud, move back” means the sound is clipping.
- Press Pause to take a break, or Stop when you’re done.
- Trim the ends: drag the handles, or press Auto-trim silence.
- Choose a format and press Download.
With the tool focused, R starts and stops a recording, P pauses, K plays, [ and ] set the trim start and end at the playhead, and Esc stops playback.
How this voice recorder works
This voice recorder online uses MediaRecorder, the recording feature built into every current browser. The format depends on the browser: Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM with the Opus codec, and Safari records M4A with AAC. Both are compressed and sound clean for speech.
While you record, the page saves a chunk of audio every second in your browser’s storage (IndexedDB). If the tab closes or the browser crashes, your next visit offers to restore the take. The recordings list stays in this browser until you delete it.
Nothing is uploaded. Recording, trimming and converting to WAV or MP3 all happen on your device. That’s why the page needs no account, and why it keeps working on a slow connection once it has loaded.
Download formats: MP3, WAV, WebM and M4A
| Format | Best for | Size per minute |
|---|---|---|
| Original (WebM or M4A) | Quick sharing, no conversion | About 0.48 MB in Voice mode, 0.96 MB in Music mode |
| WAV | Editing and lossless archives | 5.76 MB (48 kHz mono) |
| MP3 | Plays everywhere: school portals, email, car stereos | 0.96 MB (128 kbps) |
The original file downloads instantly because it’s exactly what the browser recorded. Some players show an unknown length for WebM files from Chrome; choose MP3 or WAV if that matters.
Trimmed audio is always saved as WAV or MP3, because the tool has to rebuild the file. MP3 conversion runs in the background with a progress bar; a 10-minute recording takes a few seconds on a laptop and longer on a phone. Stereo WAV files are twice the size shown.
Voice mode and Music mode
Voice mode asks the browser for the processing that video calls use: noise suppression (noise cancellation), echo cancellation and automatic gain. It’s the right choice for notes, lessons and voice-overs, because it lowers fan hum and keeps your level steady.
Music mode turns all three off. Noise suppression can cut off long notes or mistake a guitar for noise, and automatic gain makes the volume pump up and down between phrases. So for singing and instruments, this online voice recorder records the sound as it is, at a higher bit rate and in stereo when your mic supports it.
Tips for a clean recording
- Keep the mic 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) from your mouth and slightly to the side, so “p” and “b” sounds don’t pop.
- Record in a quiet room with soft things around you, such as curtains, a sofa or a bed. A closet full of clothes works well for voice-overs.
- Watch the meter. Peaks between −20 and −6 dBFS leave room for a louder word without clipping.
- Avoid Bluetooth headsets as the mic. They switch to a call mode with lower sound quality while recording.
- Make a 10-second test first and listen back with headphones.
Not sure your microphone works? Check it with the mic test first.
Saving and sharing your recordings
Your recordings list lives in this browser on this device. Browsers can clear site data, for example when you clear your browsing history or when storage runs low, and Safari may clear data for sites you haven’t visited in a while. Download anything you want to keep.
There are no share links, because nothing is uploaded. On phones, the Share button opens the system share sheet with the file itself, so you can send it in a message or email, or save it to your files. On a computer, download the file and attach it.
For longer edits, open the file in the MP3 cutter. To turn a clip into a ringtone, use the ringtone maker.
Voice recorder apps on your phone and computer
Your device probably has a voice recorder already:
- Windows 11: Sound Recorder.
- Mac and iPhone: Voice Memos.
- Android: the recorder app from your phone’s maker; Pixel phones have Google’s Recorder.
This page is quicker on a borrowed or work computer where you can’t install apps, when you need an MP3 or WAV file right away, or when you want to trim and download in one place. To see the pitch of your voice, try the voice pitch analyzer.
